Another frequently asked question at the Calor Gas Principal Dealer Towler & Staines is "does Calor Gas go off", losing its effectiveness as time passes.

The answer is that Calor Gas which is liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) presented as butane in blue bottles, propane in red bottles and Patio Gas in green bottles with a red top does not deteriorate with age.

How often should I change my Calor Gas hose?

At the moment our blogs are concentrating on answering frequently asked questions from our Calor Gas customers. One such question relates to how often to change gas hose.

The answer is that LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas ) hose should be changed every 5 years to ensure safety in use. Nowadays, it is best to use orange hose as it has a manufacture date on it. In reality it will need to be changed in less than 5 years because there is a period when it is held in stock by the retailer. If your appliance still has black hose, it is highly likely that it needs changing.

LPG hose is made from neoprene, not rubber. This is because LPG attacks rubber and such tubing would rapidly become unsafe when used with Calor Gas.

It is also recommended that your Calor Gas regulator is changed every ten years to ensure safety.
Incidentally you should never use a petroleum based grease such as Vaseline or lubricating grease with an LPG (Calor Gas) regulator as the gas reacts unfavourably with other petroleum based materials.

Do I need to change from propane to butane Calor Gas for summer caravanning?

Another of the frequently asked questions of Calor Gas Dealers Towler & Staines, the LPG Specialists is "do I need to change from propane to butane Calor Gas cylinders when I go caravanning or camping in summer?

The answer is no, because propane offers you the same qualities of performance as butane and has greater flexibility in terms of available regulators. You can fit a regulator which passes a greater amount of gas if you have a lot of gas appliances in your caravan such as a water heater.

For the technically minded, butane has a maximum flame temperature of 1996 degrees C and propane 1980 degrees C. The Calorific Value vaporised is 3200 BTu per cubic foot for butane and 2500 BTu per cubic foot for propane. Butane is needed for indoor use and propane for external use in many applications.

However, the gas performance difference is not really noticeable in use so we advise you to stay with propane all year round.

Why  should I use propane in winter for my caravan?

Butane gas ceases working at 0 degrees C whereas propane gas actually boils at -42 degrees C and will therefore always work in winter. The only real cost in making the change is the purchase of a new propane regulator. It is important to that the new regulator passes sufficient gas to power all the appliances in the caravan. Water heaters can consume a larger amount of gas than most other appliances.
