A message to drinks dispense gas users in pubs, clubs and restaurants.

Towler & Staines supply drinks dispense gas from Air Liquide as well as Calor Gas and Air Products industrial gases from their depots in Keighley and Bradford.

The British Beer & Pub Association have published a guide for Landlords and Bar Managers on the use of drinks dispense gases. The major points are as follows:Licensees are under immense cost pressures, with competition from other leisure activities and greater consumption of alcohol in the home. Increasingly, outlets are being targeted by seemingly attractive offers from non-reputable suppliers of dispense gas. Some of the consequences of this may be:

  • One cylinder of bad dispense gas will ruin up to 10 kegs of beer.
  • Customers will be lost through poor beer quality.
  • The supplier will refuse compensation claims.
  • There will be risk of prosecution for breach of Food Regulations and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Bad dispense gas may be supplied by rogue traders often in stolen cylinders in poor condition, without product identification labels, often filled with poor quality and/or contaminated gas- sometimes it might even be just compressed air! Poor quality dispense gas reflects directly on drinks quality and service.

Such cylinders have violently ruptured in cellars, causing immense damage and injury. Short of
rupture even a slow leakage of a non-breathable gas within the confined space of a cellar could lead to a very hazardous atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen have no odour and people have died in such atmospheres.

All drinks dispense cylinders supplied by Towler & Staines are from Air Liquide and are of food quality and comply with all legal and Health and Safety requirements. You can be sure that you are safe and problem free with their drinks dispense gases.

A future blog will give further details on this subject including product labelling, food traceability, labels, cylinder test date rings, and a dispense gas checklist.

An LPG safety message for caravanners, motorhome owners and gas barbecue users from Towler & Staines

Hopefully, Spring is on the way and our thoughts turn to our outdoor leisure pursuits. At Towler & Staines we believe that now is the time for caravanners, motorhome owners and gas barbecue enthusiasts to examine their equipment before the season starts. For safety it is important to examine the gas hose to your appliance(s).

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas ) hose should be changed every 5 years to ensure safety in use. Nowadays, it is best to use orange hose as it has a manufacture date on it. In reality it will need to be changed in less than 5 years because there is a period when it is held in stock by the retailer. If your appliance still has black hose, it is highly likely that it needs changing.

LPG hose is made from neoprene, not rubber. This is because LPG attacks rubber and such tubing would rapidly become unsafe when used with Calor Gas.

It is also recommended that your Calor Gas regulator is changed every ten years to ensure safety.
Incidentally you should never use a petroleum based grease such as Vaseline or lubricating grease with an LPG (Calor Gas) regulator as the gas reacts unfavourably with other petroleum based materials.

If in doubt contact the staff at Towler & Staines Calor Gas Dealers in Bradford and Keighley who will be happy to help you.

More messages for drinks dispense gas users in pubs, clubs and restaurants.

In a previous blog we discussed the dangers of not having a scrupulous supplier of drinks dispense gas. Now we will point out how to spot a good drinks dispense gas cylinder.

By law, all dispense gas cylinders must clearly display a label or other printed information covering the following items:

  • Product identity.
  • Supplier's telephone number.
  • Supplier's name and address.
  • Hazard and precautionary statements.
  • Signal words.
  • Hazard warning diamond.
Also by law, all cylinders supplied for drinks dispense must have a product traceability label on the cylinder, valve or valve guard. Usually, this will be a small label added to the cylinder with a series of numbers and letters (or a barcode) that means that the supplier can trace the cylinder and its contents in the event of any quality issue. These labels are changed every time the cylinder is refilled.

You must not use a dispense gas cylinder if it does not have product and traceability labels.

We will publish another blog shortly about cylinder testing and offer a check list to advise the drinks dispense gas customer.

Towler & Staines the Calor Gas Principal Dealer supplies Air Liquide Drinks Dispense Gas which complies stringently with the conditions we have been outlining.
