A safe way to spot heat the home

My daughter has two cats and recently had a baby boy; she has always used a Calor radiant heater for spot heating her kitchen, it keeps her central heating bills to a minimum. To give her peace of mind with greater safety for both pets and the baby we have changed to the Campingaz Catalytic Heater which is easily moveable and has three heat settings up to 3kW. A 15kg cylinder of Calor Gas will last 130 hours.

The safe aspect is that there is no naked flame save for a tiny pilot light. It has an oxygen analyser which shuts the gas supply off if the available oxygen level in the room drops below a safe level. There is also a flame failure device which shuts the gas supply off if the pilot light is extinguished.

The catalytic heater was originally designed for high traffic areas in the commercial world but it also suits a home with small children and or pets.

Rising energy prices

During the last week there has been a great deal of media coverage on the price rises by British Gas and other energy companies. Radio interviews featured people who could not afford to run their central heating at all or others who were postponing the switch on as long as they can.

At Towler & Staines Ltd. we believe that mobile Calor Gas heaters have a significant role to play in solving the problem. Above all our cabinet heaters are portable and can be wheeled from room to room, providing spot heat in the zone where you need it. You can leave the central heating for the whole house turned off!

These heaters are "pay as you go" for the Calor Gas cylinders which means no nasty shocks at the end of the month or quarter.

We have a wide range of heaters available at amazingly low prices. Let us be part of your solution to escalating energy prices! http://www.towler-staines.co.uk/shop/141-mobile-heaters

Gas or charcoal barbecue?

I have been in the Calor Gas business for over thirty years and have always barbecued using a gas barbecue, as you might expect! However, a couple of weeks ago we had a holiday in a Portugese villa and it had a built-in charcoal barbecue (pictured above).

In one week we had to buy 2 x 5kg bags of charcoal at 4 euros each. The charcoal lumps were often enormous and needed breaking up to make them usable, a filthy business! Each barbecue ignition required half a pack of firelighters at 3.50 euros per pack. Placing them made my hands reek of petrol and so I had to wash my hands again before putting the food on.

Unlike gas, control of the heat was a nightmare, as we could adjust the height of the food grid (3 positions) and that was all. When the barbecue was ready for the food about 40 minutes after ignition (unlike gas where it is 5 minutes) the temperature was far too hot. It was virtually impossible to turn the food with tongs owing to the heat (I lost most of the hairs on my hand in the process). I then tried to use the tongs with oven gloves but control was not easy and several pieces of food were sacrificed to the charcoal inferno below.

As always happens some food items were ready before others and there was nowhere to remove them from searing heat just to keep warm as you can on a gas barbecue. We also had a sharp rain shower and of course the barbecue lacked the portability of a gas barbecue to seek shelter.

So I continue to believe that gas barbecuing is the real answer. What do think folks? Let us have an on line debate on the subject. http://www.towler-staines.co.uk/shop/97-gas-barbecues
