Do I need to change from propane to butane Calor Gas for summer caravanning?

Another of the frequently asked questions of Calor Gas Dealers Towler & Staines, the LPG Specialists is "do I need to change from propane to butane Calor Gas cylinders when I go caravanning or camping in summer?

The answer is no, because propane offers you the same qualities of performance as butane and has greater flexibility in terms of available regulators. You can fit a regulator which passes a greater amount of gas if you have a lot of gas appliances in your caravan such as a water heater.

For the technically minded, butane has a maximum flame temperature of 1996 degrees C and propane 1980 degrees C. The Calorific Value vaporised is 3200 BTu per cubic foot for butane and 2500 BTu per cubic foot for propane. Butane is needed for indoor use and propane for external use in many applications.

However, the gas performance difference is not really noticeable in use so we advise you to stay with propane all year round.

Why should I use propane in winter for my caravan?

At Towler & Staines the LPG Specialists we are asked lots of questions from Calor Gas customers and so we have decided to write a series of blogs with our answers.

Why  should I use propane in winter for my caravan?

Butane gas ceases working at 0 degrees C whereas propane gas actually boils at -42 degrees C and will therefore always work in winter. The only real cost in making the change is the purchase of a new propane regulator. It is important to that the new regulator passes sufficient gas to power all the appliances in the caravan. Water heaters can consume a larger amount of gas than most other appliances.

Our suggestions on minimising your energy bills

Energy prices are still high and take up a disproportionate amount of the household budget. The media are still giving this a great deal of attention.

At Towler & Staines Ltd. we believe that mobile Calor Gas heaters have a significant role to play in solving the problem. Above all our cabinet heaters are portable and can be wheeled from room to room, providing spot heat in the zone where you need it. You can leave the central heating for the whole house turned off!

These heaters are "pay as you go" for the Calor Gas cylinders which means no nasty shocks at the end of the month or quarter.

We have a wide range of heaters available at amazingly low prices. Let us be part of your solution to escalating energy prices!

Why does my Calor Gas cylinder sometimes freeze up?

At Towler & Staines we pride ourselves on being LPG Specialists because we have been Calor Gas Principal Dealers for over 50 years. During that time we have answered a number of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and so over the next few weeks we are going to answer some.

Why does my Calor Gas cylinder sometimes freeze up?

Calor Gas is a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and if your cylinder was transparent it would appear like a bottle of water. When in use the gas valve is open and the liquid becomes gaseous to power your appliance. The process involves air pressure on the cylinder exterior helping it to become a gas.
As the gas is used the liquid level in the cylinder falls and eventually there is insufficient wetted surface area on the cylinder to support the gas offtake of the appliance and the sides of the cylinder freeze up.

This only happens when the appliance such as a blown air heater is burning a great deal of gas and when the bottle is less than half full. The solutions are to turn the appliance to a lower setting or use two bottles in tandem to power it and reduce the risk of the freeze. It is also advisable to check that the regulator passes the correct amount of gas for the appliance.

Record entry for Skipton Santa Fun Run

The 2014 Great Skipton Santa Fun Run took place on Sunday 30th November and had a record number of runners, 1636 in all. The event organised by Skipton Craven Rotary Club was a huge success but we will not know until February just how much money has been raised for worthy causes.

As always, the event was supported by Towler & Staines who provided the catering equipment for the hot drinks and for the runners. A number of Towler & Staines staff and their families took part in the event and a thoroughly good time was had by all.

The Towler & Staines Santas nearly ready for the starter!
