Towler & Staines the Calor Gas principal dealer in Keighley and Bradford is 70 years old
this month, whilst Calor Gas Ltd. is
80 years old.
John
Towler and Albert Staines formed a partnership as painters and decorators in
October 1945 after Albert was demobbed from the navy. The firmed prospered
moving from a handcart to motorised transport within 2 years!
In
1955 they became stockists for Calor Gas
Ltd. The inspiration for this came from them having to go to Bradford to
buy Calor bottles for their butane powered blowtorches for paint stripping,
also Albert had built a caravan helped by a joiner friend!
During
the 1960s the Calor business blossomed owing largely to the introduction of the
mobile cabinet heater, which is still an important part of the business today.
In 1969 Towler & Staines became
Main Dealers and in 1989 they purchased the Bradford Calor Gas Centre business from Calor.
In
the year 2000 the painting and decorating business was sold to Crown Point
Decorators of Leeds. Since that time LPG and industrial gases with associated
appliances have been the total focus of the business supplying any gas in a bottle in Bradford, Keighley and the Yorkshire Dales.
Nowadays,
the list of major brands in the industry is long and impressive, including: Calor Gas LPG; Air Products industrial gases; Air
Liquide cellar gases; Campingaz;
Provence and Manhattan mobile heaters; Cadac, Beauclaire, Broil King, Webber
and Lifestyle gas barbecues; Santorini, Lifestyle, and Flame Tower patio
heaters; and Helium Balloons.
Towler and Staines website sells many
appliances nationally including the exclusive distribution of Cadac spares and accessories and Beauclaire barbecues.
The
business is constantly evolving and has recently moved into products for
caravan and motorhome owners such as Crusader outdoor furniture, Elsan toilet
fluid, Quest electrical appliances, Brookstone gadgets and many more.
The
latest venture is the appointment as official distributors of Calor wood fuels, kiln dried logs,
kindling and netted firewood. This is another form of energy to complement our
range.
We have come a long way in 70 years!
