Our suggestions on minimising your energy bills

Energy prices are still high and take up a disproportionate amount of the household budget. The media are still giving this a great deal of attention.

At Towler & Staines Ltd. we believe that mobile Calor Gas heaters have a significant role to play in solving the problem. Above all our cabinet heaters are portable and can be wheeled from room to room, providing spot heat in the zone where you need it. You can leave the central heating for the whole house turned off!

These heaters are "pay as you go" for the Calor Gas cylinders which means no nasty shocks at the end of the month or quarter.

We have a wide range of heaters available at amazingly low prices. Let us be part of your solution to escalating energy prices!

Why does my Calor Gas cylinder sometimes freeze up?

At Towler & Staines we pride ourselves on being LPG Specialists because we have been Calor Gas Principal Dealers for over 50 years. During that time we have answered a number of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and so over the next few weeks we are going to answer some.

Why does my Calor Gas cylinder sometimes freeze up?

Calor Gas is a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and if your cylinder was transparent it would appear like a bottle of water. When in use the gas valve is open and the liquid becomes gaseous to power your appliance. The process involves air pressure on the cylinder exterior helping it to become a gas.
As the gas is used the liquid level in the cylinder falls and eventually there is insufficient wetted surface area on the cylinder to support the gas offtake of the appliance and the sides of the cylinder freeze up.

This only happens when the appliance such as a blown air heater is burning a great deal of gas and when the bottle is less than half full. The solutions are to turn the appliance to a lower setting or use two bottles in tandem to power it and reduce the risk of the freeze. It is also advisable to check that the regulator passes the correct amount of gas for the appliance.

Record entry for Skipton Santa Fun Run

The 2014 Great Skipton Santa Fun Run took place on Sunday 30th November and had a record number of runners, 1636 in all. The event organised by Skipton Craven Rotary Club was a huge success but we will not know until February just how much money has been raised for worthy causes.

As always, the event was supported by Towler & Staines who provided the catering equipment for the hot drinks and for the runners. A number of Towler & Staines staff and their families took part in the event and a thoroughly good time was had by all.

Be ready for the possible power cuts being predicted.

Recently the media have been featuring concerns about our UK energy capacity. Apparently we have only 5% surplus capacity which may not be sufficient in the event of a prolonged period of very cold weather. The cold weather would significantly increase demand for electricity and the National Grid with a number of power stations out of action at the moment may not be able to cope, resulting in power cuts.

Even if you have gas central heating, electricity is required to run the pump! It may be prudent to be prepared for the worst, rather than just hoping for the best.

At Towler & Staines we are able to supply emergency heating with a wide range of Calor Gas powered mobile heaters. we also have various LPG powered stoves for cooking. Why not call and see us or visit our website www.towler-staines.co.uk/shop/141-mobile-heaters and look at our range? We probably have something worth having just in case!

How does Calor Gas work?

Calor Gas and Calor Propane are liquified petroleum gas (LPG) which is obtained directly from the North Sea or during petrol refining from crude oil.

LPG can be stored as a liquid taking up about two hundred times less space than it would as a gas.
It is stored and delivered in cylinders for a huge variety of uses in almost any location.

Butane and propane in use are effectively the same but as a liquid Calor propane has a lower boiling point which means it becomes a gas at a lower temperature and needs to be stored under higher pressure.

In the cylinder the gas is in liquid form exerting an approximate pressure of 1.72 bar at 15 degrees C
and 6.90 bar at 15 degrees C for propane. This means the correct regulator must be used : it is not possible to change from one fuel source to the other without also changing the regulator.

Calor Propane should never be stored or used indoors at a residence because it is stored under higher pressure.

The chart shows how gas pressure varies with the external temperature. The second diagram shows the change from liquid to gas when the pressure is reduced to normal ie the gas valve is open.
If you need to know more contact Towler & Staines who have staff who will be happy to help.
