Why does my Calor Gas cylinder sometimes freeze up?

At Towler & Staines we pride ourselves on being LPG Specialists because we have been Calor Gas Principal Dealers for over 50 years. During that time we have answered a number of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and so over the next few weeks we are going to answer some.

Why does my Calor Gas cylinder sometimes freeze up?

Calor Gas is a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and if your cylinder was transparent it would appear like a bottle of water. When in use the gas valve is open and the liquid becomes gaseous to power your appliance. The process involves air pressure on the cylinder exterior helping it to become a gas.
As the gas is used the liquid level in the cylinder falls and eventually there is insufficient wetted surface area on the cylinder to support the gas offtake of the appliance and the sides of the cylinder freeze up.

This only happens when the appliance such as a blown air heater is burning a great deal of gas and when the bottle is less than half full. The solutions are to turn the appliance to a lower setting or use two bottles in tandem to power it and reduce the risk of the freeze. It is also advisable to check that the regulator passes the correct amount of gas for the appliance.
