Nine facts about barbecuing in the UK.


  • At home eating and entertaining is now the UK's number one home leisure activity with two thirds of households owning a barbecue grill.
  • In 2015 the UK was once again Europe's leading barbecue nation, beating the German's into second place for the fifth time!
  • The average number of barbecues held per family during the summer has risen sharply from around 2.5 10 years ago to over 9 now,
  • Barbecue and alfresco eating has now become a standard alternative summer format with nearly half the population now considering it normal to barbecue or eat outdoors during summer.  However, paradoxically, and possibly as a result of recession, alfresco eating occasions are seen to be an indulgence or treat, with 37% likening barbecues to a dinner party in terms of entertainment value.  
  • After work or midweek barbecues now account of 48% of all barbecue occasions.
  • Despite the economic recovery, barbecue alfresco eating and entertaining  remains a fashionable and cheaper alternative to a visit to the local pub or restaurant.
  • Although grills remain the most popular, hooded barbecues are growing fast and now account for over 46% of all sales.  
  • Charcoal is no longer the most popular barbecue choice, but despite this is seeing some growth and now stands at 42% up from 37% two years ago.  However gas grills are the most popular at 47%.
