Towler & Staines: a bit of history!

Looking through some old files at Towler & Staines the Calor Gas Principal Dealer in Keighley and Bradford a couple of old photographs of its original address were discovered. The pictures are of 46 Bradford Road in Keighley which was the address in the 1950s. This building was next to Cox's Garage the BMC and Jaguar dealer and was demolished when the Alston Retail Park was constructed.

Towler & Staines was established in 1945 when Albert Staines was demobbed from the Royal Navy and formed a partnership with John Towler,  a first world war veteran. Both were painters and decorators. The business grew, employing a number of decorators. In the mid 1950s Calor Gas powered blowtorches became available which prompted the firm to become a Calor Gas Stockist alongside the decorating business.

During the early 1960s the business moved to its present Keighley address at 85 Bradford Road.
In 1989 Towler & Staines Ltd acquired the Bradford Calor Gas Centre at 498 Leeds Road where it has a purpose built outlet.

The company has added Air Liquide Drinks Dispense Gas and Air Products Industrial Gas agencies to its portfolio. The helium supplied by Air Products has led to a successful balloon business too.

From 2000 the company has specialised in outdoor leisure products and has a range of quality barbecues, patio heaters and camping stoves and accessories. The company is the sole agent for Cadac spares and accessories.  Almost all the ranges are available on line and Towler & Staines offers excellent advice and service from a staff who have many years of experience in the gas and appliance business.  The company has been 3 times National Calor Gas award winners for customer service.
